The metacoon project started in late 2001 as part of a support programme for new media in education. Since 2002 the platform has been used by the Bauhaus University in Weimar. Ever since there has been a new release each semester. These versions were used at multiple universities in Thuringia for extensive testing and improvement. The first “public” version was released at the Learntech fair in 2004.

In the meantime metacoon co-operates with several universities and companies for the further development of the platform. We work closely with the CampusSource developer network and the Bildungsportal Sachsen to conjointly develop central tools such as the connection to HIS systems.

Metacoon core team and metacoon-services
The metacoon core team consists of 7 members. Mr. Hupfer ist he head of development. He oversees two developers responsible for platform development and authoring tools. Ms. Zobel is responsible for project management, marketing, support and the production of learning material.
The rest of the team consist of developers from various Universities and companies in Germany.
.

Bauhaus University Weimar
In 2001 the Bauhaus University in Weimar project „medienquadrat“started the development of metacoon.
The developer team hived off the project from the university and now coordinates the co operation of the computer centre and the network of developers.

TU Ilmenau
The Techical University of Ilmenau is especially involved in the area of compatibility and reusability of learning content. Seminar papers and research projects helped develop concepts and solutions in this field of research. Metacoon supervised a thesis on SCORM sequencing and possible benefits for authoring work.

Friedrich-Schiller-University of Jena
The FSU is involved in the development of the metacoon authoring tools and the combination of the platform and the HIS administration system. Furthermore a team at the university is implementing a workflow for the production and streaming of videos. The FSU supports the metacoon project with development resources.

University of Erfurt
The University of Erfurt is especially active in the field of media didactics. A major task is the concept of didactical patterns for educational offerings. At the moment the development in this area is mainly focused on the development of learning material. In co-operation with the University of Erfurt metacoon is working to enhance the usability and functionality of our authoring tools as well as the layout of virtual learning rooms with the appropriate tools for special fields of use.

The University for Applied Sciences Erfurt
The University for Applied Sciences helped develop our help system. A diploma thesis created the basis for a new technology offering user and scenario orientated help content. The outcome of this cooperation will be integrated in the next metacoon release to help users register on the platform.

Fachhochschule Jena / FH-Zittau-Görlitz
The University for Applied Sciences has been using metacoon as a eLearning platform since 2005. Their computer centre helped enhance a connection to the LDAP system which had been started by the FH-Zittau-Görlitz in 2004. Currently the metacoon team is developing a central user management system for all universities in Thuringia called metadirectory.

Bildungsportal Sachsen / Technical University of Chemnitz
The Technical University of Chemnitz created the elQuest system for practicing an testing. The metacoon team and its partners helped testing the program. This authoring tools wich has been used by us and our partners for more than a year helps you create QTI compliant exercises. The display tool fort hese exercises has been a part of metacoon since release no 1.8.2.

The Campussource Developer Group
is the group of developers behind the software systems offered on the Campussource homepage. The creation and the operation of digital educational offers require numerous software tools which can not be developed by just one team. The aim of this team of developers is the integration of open source technology and the development of interfaces for learning materials, information and service. Currently the metacoon team is part of the following projects: creation of a shared XML learning material standard (DTD/schema), creation of a share SCORM runtime environment, common CMS functionalities and interfaces (repository for media and documents), the CampusSource engine as a basic system for all open source learning platforms with a central connection to HIS administration systems.

The ITO project in co-operation with the University of Stuttgart
developed open source technology fort he creation of learning material. Openoffice was customized in such a way that authors without a substantial technical knowledge are able to create structured XML learning material. The approach by the University of Stuttgart allows the creation of barrier free learning material. In cooperation our teams developed a shared document structure and integrated the metacoon books of reference into the Openoffice system. When the financial support for the team from Stuttgart stopped metacoon took over the software development. After a complete redesign the authoring tools were integrated into metacoon. The metacoon authoring tools are freeware and can be downloaded in the download section of this page.

Bildungsportal Thüringen
The „Bildungsportal-Thüringen“(educational portal of Thuringia) coordinates the actions of universities in Thuringia regarding further education. Companies, institutions private users or students can use the BPT to get an overview of current offers of continuing education and projects dealing with the integration of new media in universities in Thuringia.
The BPT supports metacoon with networking management and joint appearances at exhibitions.
metacoon is part of the team of project representatives of the BPT and providides technology and know how to young eLearning projects.

Campussource
Is a portal offering and coordinating the improvement of open source software to support the usage of new media in education and further training.
Before being accepted to the download section all software has to undergo extensive testing (usability, documentation, reliability under heavy load). metacoon successfully passed these tests and can now be downloaded freely after accepting a adapted version of the GNU licence. This way the Campussource initiative protects the user by ensuring a high quality standard. The developer teams benefit from the shared licence and joint appearances on exhibitions and collective marketing.
