With the help of the metacoon Chameleon plugin for OpenOffice you can create high quality XML learning material containing text, media (images, flash, java, video, audio), quizzes and tests, reference books, literature lists).
OpenOffice is a free word processing software.

ELQues editor

The metacoon ELQues (E-Learning- Questionary) enables you to create online quizzes and tests. The results of the tests are stored in a database an can be evaluated on your metacoon platform.
The ELQues editor is QTI compliant and can be installed on your home pc.

The metacoon web-lecture creator is a tool to create online lectures in the twinkle of an eye. Simply design your slides with the help of OpenOffice Impress or MS Powerpoint and record an audio or video file. Upload all files and follow the instructions of the metacoon web-lecture creator.

metacoon Chameleon - an OpenOffice.org-PlugIn for the production of XML documents

During the production of modern eLearning material, the content usually gets separated from the style. By doing so it is possible to display one piece of content on different devices and in different formats (course or corporate design).

In addition all content units are given a semantic description (XML-mark-ups for examples, introduction, motivation and abstract ...). The files are then provided with extensive metadata. This way the contents can be customized for multiple groups of learners. For example you can replace the examples in a project management course to make them more suitable for a special target group.

XML editors leave much to be desired for the work of an author. They force authors to use a concept of work alien to them - structure before content. Metacoon uses OpenOffice as an editor to make the process of editing XML documents more efficient and intuitive. Using OpenOffice authors can write their contents with a normal word processing software and enrich it with all kinds of media.

With the help of the metacoon transformer plugin it is possible to convert the generated OpenOffice files into metacoon documents. (Zip-files containing the XML-documents and all media). The individual documents can be compiled into complete courses within the authoring section of the platform. In the end the learners are provided with HTML courses offering a menu, related links within the course and a PDF print functionality.

The first version of metacoon was used as the internal development platform for the eLearning project team metacoon emerged from. To support the project orientated work of our team we added tools such as:

Starting in the summer semester of 2002 the platform was also used to present and manage eLearning courses produced by the project group. Ever since we have been releasing new versions of the platform each semester for a n ever growing group of users (e.g. the Schiller University in Jena and the Bauhaus University in Weimar)
